Steps 01
Steps 02
Steps 03

Open a new image 350 w x 350 h.

Pick any color then activate the paintbrush setting the size to 56 and make one stroke as shown in the image to your left.

For the second stroke make a triangle as shown in the picture to your left.

Now fill in the center as shown.

Right click, select all objects.

Right click, merge as a single object.

Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee accepting the default setting by clicking OK.

On the attribute tool bar, change the Horizontal Deform to 2D, don't worry about the color just yet, keep the default color.

Go to the Layer Manager, right click and label "01".  Delete the previous "painted" layer.

Steps 04

Using the paintbrush set to size 56, make one stroke as shown in pink in image to your left.

Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee accepting the default setting by clicking OK.

On the attribute tool bar, change the Horizontal Deform to 2D.

For now, right click on the color square, select "Windows Color Picker" and choose a darker shade than your previous color.

Go to the Layer Manager, right click and label "02".  Delete the previous "painted" layer.

Steps 05

Using the paintbrush set to size 56, make one more stroke as shown in pink in image to your left.

Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee accepting the default setting by clicking OK.

On the attribute tool bar, change the Horizontal Deform to 2D.

For now, right click on the color square, select "Windows Color Picker" and choose a lighter shade than your previous color.

Go to the Layer Manager, right click and label "03".  Delete the previous "painted" layer.

Steps 06

Using the paintbrush set to size 56, make two strokes as shown in pink in image to your left.

Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee accepting the default setting by clicking OK.

On the attribute tool bar, change the Horizontal Deform to 2D.

For now, right click on the color square, select "Windows Color Picker" and choose a lighter shade than your previous color.

Go to the Layer Manager, right click and label "04".  Delete the previous "painted" layer.

Right click on your bow tail, click arrange and then select send to back.

If you have not been saving as you go along, save your ufo now!

Steps 07

For the next step, you will need to click on each shape separately then activate the edit path tool.

You may want to add (plus sign on the attribute tool bar) or delete (minus sign on the attribute tool bar) nodes.

Experiment by pulling the node handles as you shape your pieces.

If you make a mistake, just hit the undo icon.

When done, holding the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard select pieces 1, 2 and 4, right click duplicate.  Now use the transform tool to "flip horizontally".

Right click, arrange and select "send to back".  Save your ufo!

Steps 08
Steps 09

Your bow looks similar to the top image on the left.

Go to adjust, expand canvas, check "expand sides equally" and place 20 or so for your number to give you a bit more working space.  Click OK.

Activate the edit path tool again and do a few more adjustments to the nodes so the left side of your bow looks slightly different from the right side as shown in the bottom image to your left.

When done, save your ufo.

You may want to select all and drag it to your easy palette as a "kit" to use in the future.

Steps 10

Finally the fun part, coloring the bow!
Click on shape 01 (the left portion of your bow) then click on the path drawing tool.

On the attribute tool bar, right click on the color square and select "Gradient Fill".
Click on the dark color square and select a color of your choice, I used #A50000.
Click the light color square, select a color shades lighter than your dark color.  I used #FF5151.
Now right click on your selected colors and "Add Color to Swatch".
For the fill type use the arrow down, then click ok.  I added a 2 width black border.

Open your color panel.  Click on your next shape and activate the path drawing tool right clicking on the color box as you did before and selecting "Gradient Fill".  This time right click on the color squares and select color on screen using the eye dropper to select the needed color from your color panel.

Continue adding color to your shapes, changing the fill type as needed.

Steps 11

Now to Burn and Dodge!

You can do this two different ways, the first is to covert your object from text/path to image and the second is to paint as object (clicking the lightning bolt icon).

I use the second method as I can easily erase some areas and also easily change the transparency level in the layer manager.  (If you opt to use this method once you are finished with dodge and burn, click on your background, go to Edit, Fill and change the color to black so you can easily erase any areas outside the bow.  When erasing make sure to hit the trim button on the attribute tool bar.)

Activate the Burn, lower the level setting to about 40 and raise the transparency to 70.  You may want to play with the controls to obtain the look you desire.  I use the same settings for Dodge clicking in and out of "paint as object" so I can control the transparency rather than undoing and readjusting the controls.

Use the Line & Arrow Tool set at 1 width black to create a few lines.  Save your ufo!
