Let's get started!
Create a new image 300 w x 300 h. Activate the Outline Drawing Tool
,
using the polygon star shape line width set at 1, create a star then go to edit path (you will notice the nodes are blue) and pull the inner nodes outward as shown in the diagram to your left.
Using the Line & Arrow Tool
,
draw 1 width lines from point to point as shown in the diagram to your left. Go to the layer manager and while holding the shift key select your lines and your outline, right click, group and label "lines".
Take a moment now to think what color you plan to make your star. You can use the color panel and create a swatch, create a swatch of your own using the windows color picker to select 10 shades from light to dark or use mine below.

To the left is a star diagram that shows the placement from light to dark, the lightest beginning with 1.
Activate the Magic Wand
, check the plus sign and then click on the section labeled 1, right click, expand/shrink and expand by 1 "circle shape" ok.
Go to Edit Trace, Selection Marquee and accept the default by clicking OK.
Change the Horizontal Deform to 2D object, right click on the color swatch and select "color on screen" a ink dropper appears; use this to select your color first and lightest color. Double check that the border is set to 1 width in black.
Follow the above steps for each white section until your star is completed, then go to the layer manager and label each shape from 1 to 10. When done, click on your "line" layer, right click, arrange and bring forward.

Now to tidy things up a bit! Use zoom to enlarge your star, one by one click on each panel using the edit path to stretch the shape so there are no white spots and to even your black lines. Once done, right click, select all objects and drag to your easy palette for future use.
I added noise to mine using the following settings: Variance - 5, Varied and Monochromatic both checked. You may also want to add a small star to accent the center.
