Custom Shape S50  Steps 01

Steps 02  Steps 03

Create a new image 400 w x 400 h.

Activate the Path Drawing Tool Path Drawing Tool and using custom shape S50, create a teardrop 82w x 138h using the color #93090C with a 1 width black border.

Click on the edit path icon Edit Path Tool then click the bottom node and drag downward.

Slide the side nodes outward and pull the handles as needed to shape your petal.

Doesn't have to be fancy as this is the bottom layer of petals.

Steps 04
Steps 05

Activate the Transform Tool Transform Tool.

On the attribute tool bar click on the rotate icon Rotate.

A scope appeared on your petal!

While holding down on your mouse, click and drag the scope below your petal as shown in the image to your left.

Go to the attribute tool bar, change the rotate by degree to 45.

Click on the copy rotate icon Copy Rotate until you have come full circle with your petals.

Step 06

On the attribute tool bar, click on the drop down arrow of the "transform" icon and select resize.  With the aspect ratio lock on, I decreased the height by 17.

Click on the "rotate" icon and position your mouse by one of the black nodes until the rotate arrows appear.  Rotate your petal so the point is between the bottom petals as shown in the image to your left.

Steps 07   Steps 08

Back to Path Drawing Tool, change the color to #BD090E and click on the edit path icon.

Slide nodes and handles slightly to change your petal as shown in the image to your left.

Steps 09

Activate the transform tool, click the "rotate" icon and repeat the steps you did above.  Remember to place your scope below the petal and rotating until you have completed a full circle of petals.

When done, on the attribute tool bar, click on the "flip horizontally" icon.  Click the "rotate" icon to position your petal between the points of the bottom to petals as shown in the image to your left.

Steps 10

Back to Path Drawing Tool, change the color to #D70B10.

You guessed it!  Back to the Transform Tool!  Click on the "rotate" icon and position your scope right at the bottom of your petal.  As above, rotate until you have completed a full circle.

Activate the paint brush, change the color to #93090C, the brush head size to 126, keep the soften paint edges at 50 and click on the "paint as object" icon (the lightning bolt).

Position your mouse as shown in the image to your left and click twice.  Click on the "paint as object" icon to de-activate.

Steps 11

On the attribute tool bar, change the color to #81070B, the brush head size to 2, the soften paint edges to 2 and click on the "paint as object" icon (the lihtning bolt).

Create vein lines on your petals, when done remember to click on the "paint as object" icon to de-activate.

Steps 12

Using the color #560305 with a 1 width black border create a circle of small petals as shown in the image to your left.

Steps 13

Steps 14

Using the path drawing tool, create a series of circles that range from 12-14 in diameter using the color #495006 with a 1 width black border.

When finished, change the color to #647801 with no border, create smaller "accent" circles to fit inside the previous circles you made.

Lastly, change the color to #A6B007 with no border, create weenie little "highlight" circles to fit atop the previous circles you made.

To give you an idea on the size you could go 14-10-7 or 12-7-5.  There is no right or wrong size, just vary and decrease the layers of circles.

Steps 15

Your poinsettia now looks something like the down sized image to your left.  If you have not saved your ufo, please save it now!

Using the method above and the custom tear drop custom shape, you can create leaves for your poinsettia.

I used the color #005100 with a 1 width black border for the leaf and color #002700 for the veins.

If you are happy with the results "as is" you need not continue.  I added contrast by changing shades and shapes of petals, I outlined the changes below:

Steps 16

Starting with the bottom set of petals, I changed the color of every other one to a slightly lighter shade, this can be done two ways.

The first is to select the petal and apply photo, light, brightness and contrast then select a lighter shade of your choice.  Once this is applied you can no longer edit the path shape so any changes must be finalized before hand.

I like to keep my shapes as editable paths so I use the path drawing tool, select the petal and click on the color swatch, and change the Hex# to #A8090D.

I copy the Hex#, select the next petal to change, click on the color swatch and paste in the Hex#.  For the middle layer of petals, I changed the color of every other petal to #C50A0E.  For the top layer of petals, I changed the color of every other petal to #E00C11.

Lastly, use the Edit Path Tool, add nodes, delete nodes and pull node handles to change the shape of the petals to break up the uniformity.
