Snowcone

Back in the craft days we made these out of clay pots, styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners and pom-pom balls!  I thought it would be cute to try to recreate it in Photo Impact!  It was definitely less messy!

Software: PhotoImpact Version 12
Work Mode: Full Edit
Using: Path Drawing Tool, Edit Tool, Outline Drawing Tool,
Paintbrush Tool, Line & Arrow Tool, Dodge and Burn

IMPORTANT: As soon as you complete Step 1, save your work as a ufo.
Continue to save often as you progress through this tutorial.

(In the layer manager, label "pot base".)

2D custom shape S46, size 191w x 75h, color #AF6C3A with a 1 width black border

Right click, arrange and "send to back." (In the layer manager, label "inside".)

2D circle, size 185 diameter ~ color #F4F4F4 with a 1 width black border
(In the layer manager, label "snowman".  This should be behind the "rim.")

2D oval, 38w x 70, black (right click, duplicate).  Right click, group and label "muffs."

For the eyes create the following shapes:
2D oval, 36w x 44h, white with a 1 width black border
2D circle, 33 diameter, color #693100 with a 1 width black border
2D circle, 28 diameter, color #954700 with no border
2D circle, 13 diameter, black with no border

Go to the layer manager, holding down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard, select all the eye shapes, right click, group and label eye.  (Don't duplicate for the second eye, we will do that shortly.)

Steps 02

Click on the rounded rectangle, then activate the Edit Tool Edit Tool.

Click the minus sign on the attribute tool and delete the bottom 2 nodes.

Click on the bottom line (it turns red) then click the curve on the attribute tool bar.  Click the pick tool on the attribute tool bar then click on each of the bottom nodes and pull the handles slightly upwards.

Click on the top side nodes and drag them outward slightly as shown in the image to your left.

Steps 03

Create a shadow with custom shape S46 using the color #914713, size 166w x 35h.
(Use the transform tool to "flip vertically".)

Using the Edit Path Tool, click on the bottom nodes and pull each handle slightly downwards.

Go to the layer manager.  Click, hold and drag the shadow below the rim and above the pot base.

Steps 04

Select the "star polygon shape" and change the point to 4.
Create a white 4-pt star 28 diameter for the twinkle in the snowman's eye.

Activate the paintbrush, color white, brush head size 4, transparency set to 2, click on the paint as object mode (lightning bolt icon) and paint two dots as shown in the image to your left.

Go to the layer manager, holding the "Ctrl" key down select the "eye" layer plus the twinkle and 2 dots.  Right click, group then right click and duplicate.  Use the "Arrow" key on your keyboard to position.

Steps 05

Activate the paintbrush, color #A50000, brush head size 65, transparency set to 60, click on the paint as object mode (lightning bolt icon) and click once in the cheek area as shown in the image to your left.

Set the paint brush color to white, brush head size 8, transparency set to 20, click on the paint as object mode (lightning bolt icon) and paint two dots as shown in the image to your left.

Go to the layer manager, holding the "Ctrl" key down select the "cheek and highlight dot" layers then right click, group and label cheek.  Right click again, duplicate and use the "Arrow" key on your keyboard to position.  Use the transform tool, to "flip horizontally".

Nose 01     Nose 02     Nose 03     Nose 04     Nose 05     Nose 06

Activate the paintbrush, brush head size 14-20, transparency set to 2, click on the paint as object mode (lightning bolt icon) and paint a blob for the carrot nose similar to the first image above.  No fuss as it will easily be fixed shortly.

Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee and accept the default settings by clicking OK.  On the attribute tool bar, change the Horizontal Deform to 2D, the color to color #E14400 with a 1 width black border as in the second image above

Activate the Edit Path Tool.  Add, delete or pull handles as needed to round the sides and point the tip of the nose as shown in the third image above.

Activate the Line & Arrow Tool, set the color to black, line to spline and line width to 0 hairline then create a few wrinkle lines on the carrot as shown in the fourth image above.

Right click, convert object from text/path to image then activate the Burn Tool. Using the settings as follows: brush shape set to circle, size at 12, transparency 50, level 60, slide your mouse along the bottom of the carrot as shown in the fifth image above.

Activate the Dodge tool and change settings as you did for the burn tool.   Create a few highlight spots on the top of the carrot as shown in the last image above.  You can also use dodge and burn on your clay pot, I opted not to.

If you haven't done a save of your ufo lately, do one now!

Steps 06

You can keep your snowman smooth, or use the Edit Path tool to add nodes and create some bumps as shown in the image to your left.

Using the Line &Arrow Tool set to spline, black for the color and 1 for the line width to create a 2D eyebrow.  Right click, duplicate and then "flip horizontally" with the transform tool for the second one.

Use the same settings to create the mouth.

To connect the muffs, set the line width to 3 and create an arched line or you may opt to do a curly line.  You can use the edit path icon to adjust it.  I left mine a bit wiggly.

Steps 07

Activate the airbrush, color #5F5F5F, brush shape circle, brush head 20, and transparency 50; click on the paint as object (lightning bolt icon) and paint a small oval like shape in the center of the ear muff as shown in the image to your left.

Change the color to black and the head size to 1 then 2, transparency to 4; click on the paint as object (lightning bolt icon) and paint a small strokes on the outer border of the muff.  Right click, duplicate and place on the other muff.

Change the color to #5B5B5B and the size to 1 to paint a few short strokes on the inside of the muff.  I also used the color #353535, to add a few more strokes.

Steps 08

For final touches select "Chalk", set the color to #53290B, brush head size 42, predefined options set to splatter, merge mode on pigment and texture at paper 47.  Click on the paint as object and do a few strokes.

For the text, use the Line &Arrow Tool to create a spline line, go to Object, Wrap and click Add Text to Active Path.  I used the Jester Font with the color set to white and a 1 width black border.
